Family Literacy
This program is geared towards parents, their young children, and expectant parents. Family Literacy prepares parents for the GED exam through contextualized instruction. Parents hone their reading, writing and math skills as they think, read, and write about a variety of issues related to being a parent and managing and supporting a family. While parents study, their young children one to five years of age participate in a quality children's program just down the hall.
In the GED section of this program, parents learn strategies for reading comprehension, develop their ability to communicate through writing, deepen their mathematical understanding, learn to interpret data contained in charts and graphs, and sharpen their test-taking skills.
In the PARENTING section of this program, parents increase their understanding of child development and discover ways to help their children learn and grow; strategize ways to balance the demands of school, work and family; and find out more about resources for families in our community. Parents also steer the parenting class towards issues that are personally important to them. Last, but not least, parents and young children engage weekly in fun, educational activities together.
In the CAREER EXPLORATION section of this class, parents explore their career interests and goals and find out more about the training and education required for different careers. In addition, parents gain awareness of the myraid of resources available to help them pursue their career interests. Parents may also have the opportunity engage in a job internship on or off campus.
This is a free 20 hour-a-week program, and is held off-site, a mile away from the college, at Maplewood Presbyterian Church. Child care, GED testing fee, and transportation assistance is available for qualified students.
